LIBSCAN is our latest design of laser spark analysis instrument suitable for remotely analysing the elemental composition of materials. The instruments are based on Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and have been designed to operate either as a telescope (point-and-shoot) device over distances of up to 15 metres or as a fibre-optic probe device over distances of up to 50 metres; the mode of operation being user-selectable. Two versions of the instrument are available: LIBSCAN50 and the more powerful LIBSCAN400.
Both instruments have been designed for field use and incorporate a rugged, precision-engineered laser head module connected via a heavy-duty flexible umbilical to the control unit containing the laser power supply, optical spectrograph, computer and peripherals. Umbilical lengths of up to 10 metres are possible allowing the laser head module to be located remote from the control unit.
