Welcome to the July issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter
Inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometry plays a major role as a very versatile elemental detection system in various hyphenated systems used for speciation analysis especially for quantitation. Unfortunately, some elements of special interest for biological materials, such as S, P, Fe and Se cannot be determined with the best detection power due to limited ionization efficiency and polyatomic interferences. A spanish research group no shows results obtained with a new system, demonstrating a detection power for S that is at least two orders of magnitude better than reorted before (see the news below).
There
are only two weeks left in this month which is traditionally a holiday
month with reduced activities with respect to international meetings
before the conference season re-starts in August (see EVISA's Agenda of Events).

Triple Quad ICP-MS: Pushing the limits for quantitation of phosphorus and sulfur
Polyatomic interferences limiting the detection power of ICP-MS for elements naturally present in proteins such as phosphorus and sulfur can be effectively removed with a new type of instrument based on the concept of tandem mass spectrometry. Using this approach with a hyphenated HPLC-ICP-MS system allowed analysis of S- and P-containing species with the lowest detection limits ever published
(11 and 6.6 fmol, respectively).

University of Warwick: Extreme Performance Mass Spectrometry of Metallodrugs
Two Warwick Collaborative Postgraduate Research PhD Scholarships are available from October 2012 in the groups led by Professor Peter Sadler FRS and Professor Pete O’Connor using ultra high resolution mass spectrometry to study the mechanism of action of organometallic and photoactivatable metal anticancer complexes.
