Welcome to the March issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Few weeks ago, one of the most important conferences for the speciation community took place in St. Anton, Austria. While the European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry is not entirely devoted to speciation analysis, the topic is always very pronounced at the European issue of the conference. While the conference with 474 listed participants could not reach the attention of the 2015 conference, it had all necessary ingredients making an attractive and successful conference. Speciation related topics were discussed in two complete sessions (Speciation and Metallomics) and were also present in other parts of the program. This is not very surprising, since the analytical techniques discussed during the conference are those also used for speciation analysis. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) as the most important techniques discussed within this conference is also the most often used analytical technique for speciation analysis. Thermo Fisher Scientific launched a new Triple-Quadrupole ICP-MS instruments during the conference that was highly appreciated by the community, allowing now to select such technique from more than one manufacturer (see the news below). The instrument provides enhanced detection power for elements prone to interferences and therefore will be especially welcomed by those working in the field of speciation analysis, where ultimate detection power is a prerequisite for successful application.
Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) were also discussed in three contribution during the conference. While the stability of these compounds is responsible for their accumulation in the environment, their lack of absolute stability is an issue for their application as contrast enhancer during medical imaging. Two different types of GBCAs are on the market, namely linear and macrocyclic chelates, having different levels of stability. Concerns that lacking stability of the linear chelates are responsible for an observed retention of GBCAs in the brain of patients have motivated the European Medicines Agency (EMA) now to recommend the suspension of their marketing authorisations (see the news below).

EVISA is keeping you updated with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and informations from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis.
With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.
New Triple Quadrupole ICP-MS launched by Thermo Fisher
Thermo Fisher has added a new Triple Quadrupole instrument to its portfolio of ICP-MS systems. The new iCAP TQ ICP-MS allows users to switch between single and triple quadrupole modes in a single multi-element experiment so that laboratories can keep their existing workflow as well as add new capabilities over time.

European Medicines Agency recomments to pull linear Gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents from market
The Pharmacovigilance and Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC) of the European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended the suspension of the marketing authorisations for four linear gadolinium contrast agents because of evidence that small amounts of the gadolinium they contain are deposited in the brain. The agents concerned are intravenous injections of gadobenic acid, gadodiamide, gadopentetic acid and gadoversetamide, which are given to patients to enhance images from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) body scans.
