Welcome to the April issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Trace element analysis and speciation calls for quality management and assurance when it comes to quantification. A very versatile tool for QA/QC are Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) that can help to validate methods and prove robustness against interferences. EVISA therefore is providing a database on such materials and tries to keep it up to date. The European Joint Research Centre (JRC) just released a new trout muscle certified reference material (ERM-CE101), supporting the reliable monitoring of mercury concentrations in fish (see the news below).
Selenium is a very special essential element. While it is very helpful to reduce oxidative stress, it is also toxic when certain concentrations are surpassed. The special problem for selenium is that the range between optimum concentration and toxic levels is only a factor of ten. Since bioavailability of selenium depends on its speciation, food supplements containing organic selenium species are preferred against mineral compounds. A French company providing feed additives for livestock has now obtained FDA approval of its product containing 2-Hydroxy-4-methylseleno-butanoic acid as a feed additive for chickens, turkeys and swine in the U.S. (see the news below).
Questions related to the biological function and metabolism of metal species will be discussed during the 7th International Symposium on Metallomics, taking place June 30 to July 3rd in Warsaw (Poland).
