Welcome to the December issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
An important reason for the necessity of speciation analysis is the varying biological effects, and particularly the toxicity of different species of an element. For this purpose, it is essential not only to collect toxicological data for all occurring species, but also to consider their transformations through metabolism and microbiome activities. In the case of arsenic, a metalloid detected in over 100 species in our environment, this task has only been partially completed. The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has previously reported on the toxicity of inorganic arsenic species and small molecules. This month, EFSA has submitted its risk assessment for more complex organoarsenic species (see the news below). However, EFSA must acknowledge that the data for many species is insufficient to provide a comprehensive risk assessment.
As the year draws to a close, it is time to take a brief look back. In our news section, we have reported on advancements in the analysis of trace elements and their species, as well as their occurrence in the environment, food, and humans. Over 2.8 million visitors have utilized the EVISA portal in the past year to learn about techniques, methods, regulations, and laws. Additionally, we have provided information on major conferences, symposia, and workshops, regularly updating their deadlines. Overall, the EVISA server recorded a 65% increase in visitors compared to the previous year, a significant testament to the trust in the quality of information and the selection of our topics.
The next major conference where topics of species analysis will be discussed is the "20th European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry," which will take place in early March in Berlin. Contributions for poster presentations can still be submitted until February 17.
We thank you all for your interest and your fidelity, and we hope that we can meet your expectation also during the next year.

|
EVISA is keeping you updated with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and information from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis. With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.
Health Risk Assessment of Complex Organoarsenic Species in Food
The European Commission requested that the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) conduct a risk assessment on complex organoarsenic species in food, which are predominantly found in marine foods and include arsenobetaine (AsB), arsenosugars, and arsenolipids. EFSA has now released its scientific opinion on this assessment.

DIRECTORY
|
|
|
EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc. You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).
More than 300 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.
If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
