2025/2
Welcome to the February issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

One of the main reasons for conducting speciation analysis is that different chemical species of an element can vary significantly in toxicity. This is particularly true for arsenic compounds. For instance, arsenobetaine, a predominant species found in seafood, is considered harmless, whereas inorganic arsenic is extremely toxic. Given such stark differences in toxicity, a critical question arises: what happens to these arsenic species after food is consumed and processed within the digestive tract?
A research team from the University of Bern has now demonstrated that the gut microbiome in mammals plays a crucial role in converting arsenobetaine into other arsenic compounds, including carcinogenic inorganic arsenic (see the news below). This finding underscores the importance of not only assessing the toxicity of the species present in food, but also considering the metabolic transformations they undergo in the body.

At EVISA, we provide updates on cutting-edge research related to trace elements and their chemical species, as well as information on scientific events where these findings are discussed. However, while the number of conferences continues to grow, the number of reputable events remains relatively small. To help researchers navigate this landscape, the EVISA Agenda of Events lists trusted conferences, and we also provide guidance on avoiding predatory or fake conferences (see the news below).

Meanwhile, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been making headlines, with promises of revolutionizing fields such as clinical diagnostics, medical treatment, and pharmaceutical development. But what can AI offer to analytical chemistry? We have summarized its potential impact and future applications in this field (see the news below).

How to avoid predatory/fake congresses
Predatory or fake congresses are fraudulent academic conferences that exploit researchers by charging high fees for participation while providing little to no academic value. They are often organized by predatory publishers or for-profit entities that prioritize financial gain over genuine scholarly exchange.

How Safe Is Arsenic in Seafood?
An interdisciplinary study conducted by the University of Bern reveals that gut bacteria play a critical role in converting arsenobetaine into toxic arsenic compounds. The findings show that arsenobetaine, a compound commonly found in seafood and previously considered harmless, is partially transformed into toxic arsenic species by gut bacteria in mammals. This discovery raises new questions about the safety of seafood consumption.

DIRECTORY

EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc.  You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).

More than 300 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.

If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
