Welcome to the August issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Over the past 12 months, the EVISA portal has welcomed more than 4 million visitorsreflecting another period of strong growth following the results reported for 2024. We are confident that this success stems from the portals reputation for providing reliable, high-quality information in the field of trace element and speciation analysis.
Such trusted information is increasingly valued by our community, which is growing weary of low-quality reports and even fraudulent science. A recent study by scientists at Midwest University warns that fraudulent researchproduced by an underground network of scientific fraudstersis expanding at a rate that now outpaces legitimate research (see news item below).
Nanoparticulate matter, with properties that differ significantly from bulk materials of the same composition, can penetrate living organisms at the cellular level. While the EU has banned titanium dioxide (TiO₂) as a food additive, French researchers have detected TiO₂ particles in human, animal, and infant milk (see news item below). These findings highlight milkwhether breast milk, animal milk, or formulaas a largely overlooked pathway for TiO₂ nanoparticle exposure.
More than 15 years ago, we reported on a high-profile NASA press conference in which Dr. Felisa Wolfe-Simon presented research suggesting the discovery of a bacterium from the Halomonadaceae family, isolated from Mono Lake, California, that appeared capable of substituting arsenic for phosphorus in its biomolecules. While the claim was met with immediate skepticism and subsequently refuted by two independent studies, it took until this year15 years laterfor Science to formally retract the paper (see news item below).

EVISA is keeping you updated with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and information from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis. With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.
New Study Warns: Fraudulent Science Growing Faster Than Legitimate Research
An underground network of fraudsters is producing fake scientific studies at a pace that now outstrips the growth of legitimate journals, according to a new investigation by researchers at Midwest University.

Titanium Dioxide Nanoparticles Detected in Milk Despite European Food Ban
Researchers from INRAE, AP-HP, the SOLEIL Synchrotron, and CNRS have detected titanium dioxide particles in human, animal, and infant milk. By identifying the size, composition, and forms of these particles, their work lays the groundwork for future toxicity studiesparticularly those examining the combined effects of multiple chemical exposures.

Important Warning: Scam Alert Involving Impersonation
Dear Colleagues,
I would like to alert you to a fraudulent activity targeting scientists listed in the EVISA Directory.
A criminal individual is impersonating me (Michael Sperling) and contacting colleagues using the email address Michael.Sperling@freenet.de. Please be aware that this address is not mine and has never been used by me.
The scammer is attempting to solicit money under false pretenses. Do not respond to any such messages, and do not send any payments.
If you receive such a message, please disregard it immediately and consider reporting it as phishing or spam to your email provider.
Stay vigilant, and thank you for your attention.
Kind regards,
Michael Sperling

DIRECTORY
|
| |
| |
|
EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc. You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).
More than 300 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.
If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
