2025/11
Welcome to the November issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

This is, in all likelihood, the second-to-last Speciation Newsletter from EVISA. After more than 22 years in which EVISA has been tasked with promoting speciation analysis and reporting on its developments, applications, and challenges, the question arises whether such an activity still makes sense. Speciation analysis has meanwhile evolved into a method that has become routine in many laboratories and is now used to support regulatory and legal compliance in food safety, environmental monitoring, and occupational exposure control. Once a challenge that required the development of suitable instruments and methods, other topics have since moved into the spotlight. The European Virtual Institute for Speciation Analysis has therefore decided to discontinue its activities (see the news below).

Some approaches in speciation analysis can be regarded as nontargeted element-focused analyses, aiming to identify and characterize all chemical forms of a given element within a sample. The discovery of previously unknown elemental species is a common and valuable outcome of such methods, particularly for exploring metabolic pathways in living organisms.
Using speciation analysis, researchers have recently uncovered how two edible mushroom species — Pleurotus ostreatus (oyster mushroom) and Hericium coralloides (coral tooth fungus) — absorb and transform selenium when grown with selenite (Se(IV)) or selenate (Se(VI)). Their investigation led to the identification of ten previously unreported selenium-containing metabolites, including several selenoneine derivatives and vinyl-selenocysteine-containing dipeptides (see the news below).

Multielement detection is a capability of ICP-MS not often explored when using ICP-MS coupled with HPLC for speciation analysis. Yet, now French scientists have developed a novel method enabling the simultaneous speciation analysis of iodine-, gadolinium-, and platinum-based pharmaceuticals in environmental waters (see the news below).

We are currently exploring whether parts of the EVISA content can be transferred to other platforms that serve the community. We will inform you as soon as a viable solution has been identified.

In the meantime, we warmly welcome your thoughts, comments, and suggestions. Your feedback remains invaluable to us.

The European Virtual Institute for Speciation Analysis: Promoting Speciation Analysis for More Than 22 Years – Still a Necessary Activity?
The European Virtual Institute for Speciation Analysis (EVISA) was established in 2003 to promote the field of speciation analysis by informing the scientific community about its capabilities, developments, and challenges. After more than 22 years of continuous activity—during which speciation analysis has become routine in many laboratories and has been incorporated into regulations for food safety, environmental protection, and occupational health—the question inevitably arises: Is such a promotion and information platform still needed?

DIRECTORY

EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc. You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).

More than 300 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.

If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
