Chain of Contamination
WWF's latest report "chain of contamination: the food link" explores the most important route of human exposure – food. WWF's human biomonitoring surveys and wildlife studies have highlighted parts of the complex route that chemicals take as they travel around the globe. This graphic represents the complex chain of contamination.
The global food chain is contaminated with hazardous chemicals such as DDT, PCBs, brominated flame retardants and organotin compounds. As a result, food is a majopr source of exposure for humans and wildlife. Meat, fish, dairy products, vegetables and fruit can all contain traces of made-made chemicals.
