Since 1968, research interests are in the analysis of trace elements in biological matrices, particularly the human body. Areas of focus were sample collection, sample handling, and development of analytical procedures.
From 1982, research interest moved from total element determinations to speciation of trace elements.
Involvement in the certification of biological reference materials with the Community Bureau of Reference Materials of the Commission of the European Union and with the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Currently Emeritus Research Director of the National Fund for Scientific Research, Belgium, at the Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry, Faculty of Sciences, University of Ghent, Belgium.
  • Separation techniques: liquid and gas chromatography, capillary electrophoresis, 1 D and 2 D gel-electrophoresis.
  • ICP-MS (including HR-ICP-MS, DRC-ICP-MS and LA-ICP-MS)
  • GF-AAS and AFS are used as elemental detection techniques
  • Radiotracers for method development when applicable
  • The molecular structure of the biomolecules carrying the trace element were studied with ES-MS-MS
