Molecular environmental chemistry. Nature of the physicochemical processes influencing trace metal bioaccumulation by microorganisms. Production, characterization and reactions of microbial biopolymers and the influence of the biopolymers on physicochemical processes, including flocculation and diffusion. Study of medical and environmental biofilms and hydrogels. Optimization of single molecule detection techniques in order to characterize biopolymers and colloids. Development of whole cell biosensors. Several multidisciplinary collaborations are underway with biologists, limnologists and oceanographers in order to improve our understanding of biological and environmental processes at a molecular level.
