Welcome to the December issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
The stability of species is a topic of great importance in the framework of speciation analysis. The conversion of species during analysis has to be avoided during sampling, sample storage, sample pretreatment and all steps of separation and detection. For this reason the methodology of speciation analysis aims at the reduction of the analytical procedure to a minimum of operations and the avoidance of harsh conditions with respect to pH, temperature and duration.
While such strategy can often be realized for liquid samples, solid sample call for sample pretreatment enhancing the number of operational steps of the analysis. Researchers from Prague, Czech Republic have studied the stability of selenium species during extraction from logical material. By using the most common agent Protease XIV for extraction from biological samples they observed the interconversion of selenocystine to Se-methyl-selenocysteine. The interconversion of these species was suppressed by using a protease XXIII as an alternative (see the news below).
The stability of species in foodstuffs is of special concern, since often foodstuffs will be prepared by consumers before consumption. An international group of researchers investigated the effect of cooking salmon on the speciation of arsenolipids naturally present in fresh fish. The speciation analysis performed revealed that arsenic hydrocarbons are partly converted to their thioxo analogs (see the news below).
Such and other possibilities to use the ICP-MS for enhanced analytical systems will be discussed during the Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry taking place in January next year in Tucson, Ariziona (see EVISA`s Diary of Events).
We thank you all for your interest and your fidelity and we hope that we can meet your expectation also during
the next year.
We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous Year 2022
