2007/3

Dear Subscriber !

Welcome to the March issue of the Speciation Newsletter provided by the European Virtual Institute for Speciation Analysis (EVISA).

The Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry in Taormina (Italy) has just finished. Again, as typical especilly for the European version of this conference, speciation analysis was a major topic during this event. Also, instrument manufacturers being active in this field are getting an increasing number of customer requests related to speciation analysis. The next big event for speciation analysts and the only one focused on that topic this year is  TraceSpec 2007,  September 4-7, 2007  in Münster, Germany. You should not miss this one !

Mercury is a hot topic since quiet some time. There is an ongoing discussion, whether the nutritional value of omega fatty acids in fish outbalances the health risk posed by the methylmercury contamination. The world's leading mercury scientists now presented their
33 principal findings within "The Madison Declaration on Mercury Pollution" published this month in Ambio.  The scientists concluded from five synthesis papers, developed at the Eighth  International Conference on Mercury as a Global Pollutant last August in Madison, Wisconsin that the health risks posed by mercury-contaminated fish is sufficient to warrant issuing a worldwide general warning to the public-especially children and women of childbearing age-to be careful about how much and which fish they eat.

Another question is how to fight global mercury pollution. Since  the behavior of mercury in the environment depends on its speciation, only speciation analysis provides the necessary information for risk assessment, remediation and strategies for emission control and reduction.

We hope that our Speciation Newsletter is of some interest for you. If you have comments, suggestions for new topics or criticism, please feel free to contact us at info@speciation.net or via our contact form available from our homepage.

New research results suggest that mercury hotspots in the northeastern US are home made
EPA analysis inadequate and Clean Air Mercury Rule could perpetuate biological mercury hotspots Scientists released the results of two new studies that identify five known and nine suspected biological mercury hotspots in northeastern North America and for the first time link them directly to causes. The authors pinpoint U.S. coal-fired power plants are the major source of the problem and document new ways that airborne mercury emissions can cause biological hotspots — namely in watersheds sensitized by decades of acid rain and reservoirs manipulated for power production. New results reveal that EPA’s mercury deposition estimates near one hotspot are far too low.
