2007/8

Dear Subscriber !

Welcome to the August  issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter.

EVISA is providing most up-to-date high quality information via its web site at www.speciation.net. This month, we have continued our series on speciation analytical techniques with a summary page on GC-ICP-MS. These technique related pages are meant to facilitate your access to relevant information by providing links to the most relevant publications and resources available on the internet. These summary pages will also guide you to information available via the EVISA database system (Scientists, Journals, Companies and Products) and towards resources available from manufacturers and other "grey" literature.

We also have improved the versatility of our web site by adding new features such as glossarization and glossary index (see a short description on the home page).  These features facilitate your access to relevant information by providing links across the whole EVISA web site.

The best way to be informed about new trends in speciation science is off-course to have direct contact with the scientists working in the field.
A good opportunity to get information about speciation analysis will be the workshop TraceSpec 2007, the only event focused on speciation analysis during this year.  Organized by EVISA, the University of Münster and IAEAC, this event  to be held September 4 -7, 2007 in Münster unifies the experts in the field of speciation analysis, researchers from different fields using speciation analysis and legislators and other interested participants.  An attractive program consisting of plenary lectures, contributed presentations, posters and an exhibition will provide an overview about the state-of-the-art. A short-course given by one of the experts in speciation analysis is meant to provide a brief overview (registration is free for TraceSpec participants but requires explicit reservation). You should not miss this important event !  The programm including abstracts is available on the TraceSpec web site at:
https://speciation.net/event/TraceSpec2007/index.html.

We hope that our Speciation Newsletter is of some interest for you.
If you have comments, suggestions for new topics or criticism, please feel free to contact us at info@speciation.net or via our contact form available from our homepage.

GC-ICP-MS: A very sensitive hyphenated system for speciation analysis
Gas chromatography is a very effective sample introduction technique for atomic spectroscopy because of the absence of a condensed mobile phase and the very high separation efficiency. Unfortunately, it is limited solely to organometallic compounds which are volatile and thermally stable in the native form or which can be converted to a volatile form by means of derivatizaton.

Speciation analysis in forensic science: Arsenic speciation is supporting the hypothesis that Napoleon was poisoned with inorganic arsenic
New results obtained from arsenic speciation analysis of hair samples derived from Napoleon Bonaparte are supporting the arsenic poisoning theory.
