Welcome to the August issue of EVISA's Speciation
Newsletter. For most of you, holidays are now over and important events are ahead. During the last two issues of EVISA's speciation Newsletter we discussed the interplay of speciation analysis and toxicology. Today we would like to put some light on the relationship between speciation and legislation (please see also the Brief summary on this topic). Using the example of methylmercury, experts in the field of toxicology draw lessions from mistakes that delayed regulation of mercury pollution (see the news below). While first reports on the neurotoxicity of methylmercury date back about 150 years, international agreement to control mercury pollution was reached only in 2009. Their review of the literature is a collection of scientific failures, resistance and lack of cooperation, but mostly of political inactivity blaiming scientific uncertainty. The discrepancy between scientific knowledge and adequate reaction in the case of methylmercury is only one example. The same problem was already seen in the case of tetraethyllead as an additive of gasoline, where it also took decades that mass production of a strong neurotoxin was stopped. And there are still cases ahead that have not yet been stopped albeit scientific indications, e.g. the use of the strong neurotoxin ethylmercury in the form of Thimerosal as a preservative in vaccines...
We share the opinion of the authors of the review who conclude that more research is certainly needed, but prevention and correction of human health issues need not and should not be delayed by a desire for absolute proof.

Investigation of the influence of chemical speciation on the accuracy of QSPR/QSAR models:
The biological activity and fate properties of chemicals can drastically change depending on whether ionic or neutral forms of molecules are present in the environment. The difficulties with this task are frequently connected to low accuracy of existing methods to predict dissociation constants of molecules. The pKa model or otherwise calculated dissociation constants and/or experimental dissociation constants of molecules will be used to address this question and explore whether use of chemical speciation can increase accuracy of QSPR / QSAR models.

University of Liverpool: Iron speciation and humic substances in seawater
It is proposed that the student in this project makes a detailed study of the chemical speciation of iron and the concentration of iron-binding HS. Previous work has demonstrated the presence these ligands in Liverpool Bay and the Irish Sea. We will now concentrate on the estuary of the Mersey as a source of these ligands. The work may be extended to the Irish Sea. Samples will be collected during cruises with the University research vessel or the Environment Agency.
