Welcome to the January issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
We are starting the new year by continuing our section of brief summaries on important topics of speciation analysis. The quality of results is a topic of primary concern, since analytical results provide important information which are often the basis for costly decisions. The tools of quality assurance and control are meant to ascertain that results obtained are fit for purpose with respect to accuracy and precision. Certified Reference Materials (CRMs) are an integral part of the QA/QC toolbox. In our brief summary we discuss how to use CRMs for method calibration and validation (see the news below).
Since the preparation of CRMs is a very laborious and costly procedure, CRMs are only available for those cases, being in the interest of an important number of customers. For this reason the number of CRMs related to speciation analysis is very limited. EVISA not only provides information about such materials via its Material Database but also informs about new materials within the news section. Just recently a new material meant to improve the accuracy of methylmercury analysis became available from the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission (see the news below).

EVISA is keeping you updated with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and informations from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis.
With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.
Use of certified reference materials (CRMs) for speciation analysis
The quality of data generated by speciation analysis is especially critical whenever decisions based upon the amounts of species are related to human health risks. The quality and validation of these measurements using the approved analytical methodology could be significantly enhanced by incorporating certified reference materials as part of the quality control protocols, yet this has not been widely implemented. Here we briefly discuss how data from certified reference materials can provide critical information that can impact assessments regarding data use that is unavailable by other means.

ERM-AE671: A new Certified Reference Material to make methylmercury measurements in food more reliable
Scientists from the European Joint Research Centre (JRC) developed a new certified reference material (CRM) to improve the accuracy of methylmercury measurements in food. This CRM (ERM-AE671) consists of isotopically labelled methylmercury with certified values for the isotopic composition. Used as internal standard, it will make the measurements of methylmercury more accurate.
