2017/08
Welcome to the August issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

We just came back from the 6th International Symposium on Metallomics that was held in Vienna last week (see our report below). By the way that is also the reason for being a bit late with this issue of the "Speciation Newsletter". A major part of researchers working on speciation analysis has moved towards life science and is working in the domain of "metallomics".  While the scientific program of the symposium was very attractive, the symposium gathered a limited number of about 200 and could not reach the attendance of former symposia. The first Metallomics symposium  took place in Nagoya, Japan in 2007 (see the history of the symposium). Interestingly, also the third biggest group of researchers in Vienna came from Japan (see our report below).

A group of researchers in Japan has succeeded in synthesizing an  insulin analogue with long-lasting activity by replacing the interchain disulfide in bovine pancreatic insulin (BPIns) with a diselenide bridge. The researchers hope that this new insulin analog may improve the treatment of diabetes (see the news below).

We frequently reported about the side effects of gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents. The European Medicines Agency (EMA) recently issued a final opinion confirming restrictions on the use of certain gadolinium agents in MRI body scanners and suspending the authorizations of others (see the news below).

Last month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the approval of new water quality criteria for mercury in California waters. The new rules, developed by the State Water Resources Control Board, set mercury limits in fish tissue to protect human health and aquatic-dependent wildlife. New protections also have been added for tribal cultural use and subsistence fishing (see the news below).
