2017/09
Welcome to the September issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

The lack of rules and legislation is often cited as one of the reasons that speciation analysis is not performed routinely. On the other hand, some of the most important environmental issues have been identified by speciation analysis and have resulted in related legislation:

The toxicity of tetraethyllead (TEL) used as an anti-knock agent for gasoline, the resulting contamination of the environment and the hazardous effect on the health of humans has been studied by trace element and speciation analysis. As a result, after decades TEL was banned in most countries.

The intoxication of a great part of the population of Minamata and Nigata in Japan by methylmercury has been identified by speciation analysis and has led to the so called "Minamata Convention".

The pollution of coastal water with tributyltin (TBT) leaching from anti-fouling paints and its toxic effects on mussels and oyster banks has been identified by speciation analysis and has led to the international ban of TBT.

This month we report about two cases related to rules and legislation for metal species.

Hexavalent chromium is recognized as a human carcinogen and exposure therefore should be avoided especially for the most vulnerable groups such as children. Therefore, the European Commission has notified the WTO of a draft Directive amending the migration limit for chromium VI in scraped-off toy materials (see the news below).

We frequently reported about the side effects of gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents.  The Medical Imaging Drugs Advisory Committee (MIDAC) of the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) voted 13 to 1 on last Friday, with 1 abstention, for recommending adding a warning to labels about gadolinium retention for gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) used during MRI (see the news below).

Additionally, the committee also voted unanimously to recommend the FDA consider requiring industry conduct more research on the side effects of GBCAs. This is clearly a call for speciation analysis, since it is already known that different GBCA behave differently.

DIRECTORY

EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc.  You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).

More than 280 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.

If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
