2018/4
Welcome to the April issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

In January this year the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) has added some cadmium compounds to the REACH candidate list of compounds of very high concern (SVHCs).  Cadmium is known to cause kidney damage. Chocolate and other sweetened cocoa products used in cocoa beverages are frequently consumed by children and adolescents and represent one of the main sources of cadmium exposure for these age groups. Also on 1 January 2018 a new amendment ((EC) No 488/2014) to Commission regulation (EC) No 1881/2006 came into force establishing, among others, new maximum residue levels (MRLs) for cadmium in chocolate and cocoa products. The European Joint Research Center (JRC) has now released a new Certified Reference Material (CRM) ERM-BD512 Dark Chocolate supporting food authorities in ensuring chocolate is safe for consumption (see the EVISA News blow).

Marking the 10th anniversary of the implementation of the European Union’s (EU’s) REACH Regulation, the EU Commission has published a report highlighting the EU’s progress in reducing chemical risks and laying out future areas for proposed actions. This report includes three reviews: one on possible registration of polymers and two on minimum information requirements for low tonnage substances (1-10 tons/year). The report also proposes a number of areas under the current REACH scheme that the Commission plans to target for improvement in the future (see the News below).

Speciation analysis provides enhanced information compared to more simple trace element analysis. A group of international scientists now demonstrates that mercury isotope signatures can be used to trace the major mercury exposure sources for
different populations from three different areas in Guizhou Province (South China) representing a mining, an urban and rural area (see the News below).
