2019/2
Welcome to the February issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

In the first week of Februray the European Winter Conference on Plasmaspectrochemistry took place in Pau (France). The city is hosting a very active group of researchers in this field around Olivier Donard, Ryszard Lobinski and Joanna Szpunar.  All of them have acted as a chairperson for this conference. Olivier Donard was the chair for the conference in 1999 in Pau, Joanna Szpunar organized the conference together with Pavel Koscielniak in 2013 in Cracow (Poland) and Ryszard Lobinski organized this event this year. While not that easy to reach Pau, the  conference attracted more than 500 participants. As typical for the European issue of the conference, speciation analysis was again an important topic (see the news below).

Speciation analysis is trying to answer important questions related to the metabolism of chemical species in biological organisms  or biogeochemical cycle of elements in the environment.  The retention of gadolinium in patients having received Gd-based contrast agents for diagnostic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a topic that calls for the investigation by using techniques for speciation analysis (see the news below).

Since the community being active in speciation analysis is using many different analytical techniques - actually the whole tool-box of analytical chemistry, there is no single event that brings the different researchers together. The only conference that had tried so, namely the "TraceSpec", was given up because of difficulties to reach a broad acceptance. Therefore, researchers being active in speciation analysis will meet each other during sessions dedicated to speciation analysis at analytical conferences of broader interest. The next conferences in Europe with dedicated speciation sessions are the following:

The ANAKON 2019 in Münster is the most important German speaking conference on analytical chemistry.

The role of trace metals in life science will be discussed during the 7th International Symposium on Metallomics, taking place June 30 to July 3rd in  Warsaw (Poland).

The retention of gadolinium in the human body following the use of gadolinium-based MRI contrast agents: a call to action for analytical chemists
Gd-based contrast agends partly remain in the body of patients for quite some time. The information from speciation analysis is needed in order to answer why.
