Welcome to the March issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Last week at the UN Environment Assembly in Nairobi, Kenya, the UN published the most comprehensive and rigorous assessment on the state of the environment. The report is warning that damage to the planet is so dire that peoples health will be increasingly threatened unless urgent action is taken (see the news below).
Our earth went through multiple biotic crisis during the last 540 million years with numerous mass extinction events. The Great Oxygenation Event, which occurred around 2.45 billion years ago, was probably the first major extinction event. Scientists try to unravel the processes involved by searching for traces in rocks and sediments. The reconstruction of redox conditions in ancient oceans is a major challenge in Earth systems science. Isotopes of redox-sensitive metals have provided key information about past redox conditions at the Earths surface. Chromium also has the potential to provide constraints on redox conditions in
the oceans and atmosphere because Cr isotopes are fractionated during
redox reactions, however the use of Cr isotopes as a redox proxy is limited for now because
scientists havent built up a clear understanding of the global mass
balance of Cr isotopes. A new study from researchers in the US is adding to the understanding of
the chromium cycling in the aquatic environment. The new results have
important implications for the Cr isotope system as a paleoceanographic
redox proxy (see the news below).
To improve the protection of human health and the environment through
the better and earlier identification of the properties of chemical
substances is the aim of the European REACH regulatory framework. Hexavalent chromium is carcinogen and therefore on the list of substances of very high concern (SVHCs). Last week the EU General Court has ruled that a European Commission decision to
allow a company to sell pigments for paints containing lead chromates in
the EU was illegal (see the news below).
Chemical analysis is providing the information on the state of our environment and those necessary to understand the mechanisms involved. Especially speciation analysis including isotope ratio analysis provides higher information value than simple trace element analysis. Scientists working in this field will meet during some important events during the year.
The ANAKON 2019 in Münster is the most important German speaking conference on analytical chemistry.
Geochemical scientists discussing novel methodologies and insights into transformations influencing the global biogeochemical cycle will meet at the Goldschmidt conference, taking place August 18-23 in Barcelona.
