Welcome to the June issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
EVISA frequently reports about mercury, a very toxic metal and a global pollutant. While the Minamata Convention tries to reduce the release of mercury to the environment in order to minimize human exposure, this convention does not include pharmaceutical products such as vaccines. M ercury in the form of Thimerosal is added to some vaccines as an adjuvant, meant to circumvent microbial growth within the vaccine beneath other additional functions. Now a group of Chinese researcher investigated the influence of the adjuvant on the activity of vaccines against genital warts and cervical cancer. A
reduction of the immunogenicity was observed as a result of structural
alterations of the virus-like particles induced by thimerosal adduct
formation (see the News below).
Liquid Chromatography coupled to inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (LC-ICP-MS) is one of the most often technique for speciation analysis. A group of Chinese researchers now used this technique for the speciation analysis of bromine
in human serum. Bromide was identified as the most prominent species.
Questions related to the biological function and metabolism of metal species will be discussed during the 7th International Symposium on Metallomics, taking place June 30 to July 3rd in Warsaw (Poland). Abstract submission for posters is still open.
