2020/04
Welcome to the April issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

While we know that during this dangerous COVID-19 pandemic the focus is on totally different issues than speciation analysis, we nonetheless hope that you will find our selection of topics in speciation analysis interesting enough to read.

E-cigarettes are very popular, and one reason for its popularity is the belief that this alternative is much less harmful than smoking tobacco. Yet, during the last years, numerous studies have shown that e-cigarettes have their risks. Now a group of researchers from China and Canada have investigated the arsenic species in e-liquids used for e-cigarettes and the aerosols generated from them. Besides arsenate, arsenite and monomethylarsonic acid also three new species were detected (see the news below).

Organic mercury compounds are known as very potent neurotoxins. Methylmercury is passing the blood-brain barrier, accumulating in the brain before its destructive action. Ethylmercury is part of thimerosal, which is used as a preservative in certain vaccines. Although its chemistry is not very different from that of methylmercury, the use of thimerosal in vaccines has often been defended by its "much less toxicity". Now researchers from Taiwan have compared the blood-brain barrier behavior of the two compounds in rats by in-vivo analysis. Their results indicate a very similar behaviour of methylmercury and ethylmercury originating from thimerosal (see the news below).

As can be seen from EVISA's diary of events, all events until June are either canceled, postponed or modified to take place only on the internet.

DIRECTORY

EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc.  You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).

More than 290 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.

If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
