Welcome to the June issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Last month we reported about the toxic inorganic arsenic found in many rice products sold in the UK. Unfortunately inorganic arsenic is not the only arsenic species that is very toxic. It has been discovered relatively recently, that arseno hydrocarbons (AsHCs) found in some fish, have high cytotoxic potential to human cells. A European group of researchers have now investigated, whether there is a risk for newborns breast-feed by their mothers having consumed fish (see the news below).
Apart from drinking water, all beverages including alcoholics may contribute to the uptake of trace elements. The health risks resulting from such exposure are dependend on the bioavailability and toxicity of these trace elements. Aluminium is such a toxic metal that is believed to play an active role in some neurodegenerative diseases. A group of polish scientists have now developed a method for the speciation analysis of aluminium in wine and found that the aluminum content in wine significantly exceed the limit established by the WHO for drinking water (see the news below).
The journal "Frontiers in Chemistry" has opened a new research topic devoted to "Advances
in Analytical Techniques and Methodology for Chemical Speciation
Study". The issue is open for contributions (see the news below).
