2021/10
Welcome to the October issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

Mercury is a global pollutant and a human health hazard. Humans are exposed mainly via the consumption of seafood. That is why the mercury in the oceans is a special threat and a driving force to understand its transport to the sea and entering the food web.  Now a study directed by the University of Basel has revealed how the harmful pollutant is transported to the sea in the first place. The main path is not primarily via rainfall, as previously assumed, but rather also involves gas exchange as an important process. Measures to reduce mercury emissions could therefore take effect faster than previously thought (see the news below).

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women after skin cancer. 15 years ago we reported about the hypothesis that aluminum salts in antiperspirants are causing breast cancer. Our headline at that time implied that such hypothesis would warrant further research. We believe that today, 15 years after such speculations, it is time to revisit the case and see whether the research has found an answer (see the news below).

Many conferences scheduled for this year are still foreseen as virtual meetings. Those scheduled for next year are mostly foreseen as meetings with personal presence. Let's cross our fingers that we can meet again vary soon. EVISA's Agenda of Events is frequently updated in order to keep you informed about the organization of relevant events.

NEWS
EVISA is keeping you updated with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and information from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis.

With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.

EVISA News revisited: Potential link between aluminum salts in deodorants and breast cancer warrants further research
15 years ago we reported about the hypothesis that aluminum salts in antiperspirants are causing breast cancer. It is time to follow up and to summarize what has been investigate so far.

How mercury gets into the sea
Mercury released into the atmosphere by mainly thermic industrial processes is transported via different ways to the sea where it enters the marine food web. Now a study directed by the University of Basel has revealed how the harmful pollutant is transported to the sea in the first place. The main path is not primarily via rainfall, as previously assumed, but rather also involves gas exchange as an important process. Measures to reduce mercury emissions could therefore take effect faster than previously thought.
