2022/01
Welcome to the January issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

Our first newsletter for the year 2022 starts with a new study on the most often discussed element mercury. A team of researchers from the US and Canada have reported the results of a study conducted over 15 years in the Experimental Lakes Area (ELA) in Canada. Using a traceable form of mercury, which was added to a lake and its watershed, they discovered that the new mercury added quickly built up in fish populations, and then declined almost as quickly once they stopped additions. This is good news with respect to regulations meant to reduce mercury emissions to the environment (see the news below).

The second study highlighted in this newsletter is about an element much less often discussed. Antimony (Sb), a toxic metalloid, has received increasing attentions due to recent awareness of its rich chemistry somewhat similar to that of its group member arsenic.  Chinese researchers have identified a previously unknown Sb species, trimethylmonothioantimony (TMMTSb). TMMTSb was readily formed when trimethylantimony (TMSb) reacted with sulfide and was found in hot spring sediments and paddy soil incubated with trimethylantimony (see the news below).

Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) played a major role for speciation analysis in both studies. Such and other possibilities to use the ICP-MS for enhanced analytical systems will be discussed during the Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry taking place this week in Tucson, Ariziona (see EVISA's Diary of Events).

Reducing mercury pollution entering lakes quickly lowers how much harmful mercury is found in fish
This is the outcome of a study published a few weeks ago in Nature. During the study, conducted over 15 years, scientists intentionally added a traceable form of mercury to a lake and its watershed. They discovered that the new mercury they added quickly built up in fish populations, and then declined almost as quickly once they stopped additions.
