2022/02
Welcome to the February issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

Speciation analysis is often done by the hyphenation of high-performance liquid chromatography with inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. While this coupled technique combines high selectivity with high sensitivity, it also is using very complex and costly instruments and provides only limited sample throughput, making analysis expensive. In case that either the high selectivity or the high sensitivity is not necessary to provide the requested information, less complex techniques with reduced analysis costs can be envisaged.

This month we present two speciation methods using such alternative approaches. A group of researchers from Italy have developed a method which does not call for high selectivity, since the target is only the binary separation of organic mercury from inorganic mercury. The proposed technique is using a low-pressure column packed with a strong anionic exchanger that can be fed by the conventional peristaltic pump of the ICP-MS system (see the news below).

A group of researchers from South Korea have developed a method for the speciation analysis of vanadium in vanadium-fortified apples.  Since the analysis does not call for ultra-trace species determination, the researchers could use inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) instead of the costlier mass spectrometric detection (see the news below).

Unfortunately, some conferences scheduled for March are again cancelled because of the COVID pandemic. We are trying to keep you updated for those conferences related to trace element and speciation analysis.

DIRECTORY

EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc.  You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).

More than 290 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.

If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
