Welcome to the May issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Arsenic is often considered to be a synonym for poison, but in reality the toxicity is heavily dependent on the arsenic species. In general, inorganic species are considered to be more toxic than organic species and these toxic species are in the focus of food safety regulations. Anyhow during the last 15 years, some organic arsenic species have been recognized to show toxicity that should not be ignored. Dimethylated monothioarsenate (DMMTA) is such a highly toxic species that has been found in pore water from paddy fields at considerable concentrations. An international group of researchers have now found that DMMTA is also present in rice from all continents at concentrations of concern (see the news below).
Gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) are used in about every second medical magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for improving the image quality. Since the compounds are highly stable, they enter the environment unchanged via the waste water treatment plants. In order to understand their transport through soil and sediments and their uptake by plants, there is need to study their reactions with potential binding partners. Researchers from the University of Münster have now studied the interaction of GBCAs with humic acids as potential binding partners in the aquatic environment. Their results obtained by speciation analysis confirmed that Gd-humic acid adducts were formed in case of the linear gadodiamide, but not with the macrocyclic gadobutrol (see the news below).

Interaction of gadolinium-based contrast agents with humic substances
Researchers from the University of Münster have studied the interaction of gadolinium-based contrast agents (GBCAs) with humic acids as potential binding partners in the aquatic environment. Speciation analysis by size exclusion chromatography-UV-ICP-MS confirmed that Gd-humic acid adducts were formed in case of the linear gadodiamide, but not with the macrocyclic gadobutrol.

DIRECTORY
|
|
|
EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc. You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).
More than 290 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.
If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
