Welcome to the June issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Just came back from the Nordic Plasma Conference, one of the first conferences were we could meet friends and colleagues from the "speciation community" in person. That was a really nice event with a very interesting program and this time only the weather was not the best. Speciation played a big role during that conference which is typical for conferences related to plasma spectrometry. Anyhow, other topics such as imaging and single particle/single cell detection are also in the focus of plasma spectrochemists and therefore reduce the number of speciation studies that can be done by the same groups.
While "speciation analysis" has reached some degree of maturity, there are still some frontier lines for development. This can be easily being demonstrated by the news for this month. The group of Prof. Zezzi-Arruda from the University of Campinas (Brazil) is proposing to use "speciomics" as an umbrella term containing all omics approaches devoted to chemical species in biological systems. This is a widening of the concept of "metallomics" to all chemical species involved in biological systems (see the news below).
Apart from such activities to develop the methodology of speciation analysis another direction is the implementation within the routine laboratories. Facilitating speciation analysis by methods for automated sample manipulation systems could certainly contribute to a wider acceptance. Using a commercial platform automation system, scientists from Elemental Scientific have developed methods for the total arsenic determination and its speciation in urine samples. The obtained results with these methods demonstrate high sensitivity, high sample throughput and excellent accuracy (see the news below).
