Welcome to the February issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
More than a week ago we came back from the European Winter Conference on Plasma Spectrochemistry in Ljubljana. That was an event very nicely organized and the more than 500 participants greatly enjoyed to meet friends and colleagues from around the world after a long period of virtual meetings. Speciation analysis was an important topic of the conference with two sessions dedicated to speciation and two sessions dedicated to nanoparticle analysis (altogether 25 presentations). The speciation part was opened by Joanna Szpunar from Pau (France). In here plenary lecture she mentioned also the role of EVISA as an important information source for the speciation community during the last 20 years.
While the EVISA web portal with more than 17000 pages is the most important information source for all those interested in trace element and speciation analysis, google and other search engines for a long time have devaluated the site because of missing HTTPS protocol and other formal reasons. Since we have modernized our server in September last year, it seems that search engines have re-evaluated the site. In December and January, we have seen nearly twice as much visitors in comparison to months before.
Speciation analysis is of great importance, whenever the health risks related to non-essential elements in foodstuffs has to be evaluated. Mushrooms are known to accumulate trace elements from the soil into their fruit-bodies in cluding cadmium, lead, mercury and arsenic. It is also known, that arsenic speciation is quite different for different mushroom species. While there is no legislation for arsenic in mushrooms, it is important to know the arsenic content and speciation in mushrooms often consumed. A group of researchers from the University of Graz have now investigated the arsenic speciation in the most popular cultivated and wild-grown edible mushrooms in central Europe (see the news blow). Fortunately, they found no health risk for consumers of mushrooms related to arsenic.
The next conferences of importance for the speciation community are the PittCon (Philadelphia, March 18-22, 2023) and the ANAKON (Vienna, April 11-14, 2023).

NEWS
EVISA is keeping you updated with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and information from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis.
Unfortunately, this month we have not seen any publication related to speciation analysis of general interest. In case that you feel that we missed something, we would be happy to receive a notification.
With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.

DIRECTORY
EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc. You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).
More than 290 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.
If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
