2005 / 12
Dear Reader !

Welcome to the December edition of the Speciation Newsletter provided by the European Virtual Institute for Speciation Analysis (EVISA). We  apologize that due to technical problems this newsletter could not be send out in the middle of the months.

One year serving you with the EVISA Speciation Newsletter and two years of operating the EVISA web site, this is a good reason to proudly look back for a short moment. We tried to keep you updated with about one News per week about all different aspects of speciation analysis (science, legislation, politics) providing extensive cross-links to further information on our site or to external sites.

We continuously extended the information available on our web site to actual more than 2000 pages. Your response is encouraging, the server is sending out about 200,000 pages a month. We will make a real big jump to enhance the information available on the EVISA web site during the first quarter of the coming year by introducing our network of databases. Our database system on Instruments, Materials, Journals, Publications and the related Producers, Manufactureres and Publishers will be accessible by all registered users. (If you have not yet registered as a user, this should be a good reason to do it now ! Another good reason - registration is still free !)

The new year will early start with a real important event for the scientific community - The Winter Plasma Conference on Spectrochemistry. While previous conferences in the US were always less interesting with respect to speciation analysis compared to their european counterparts, this time the program related to speciation is really great. There are numerous sessions, short courses and a discussion panel related to speciation. EVISA is present in many aspects, with a booth to inform you but also represented by many members reporting about their recent work or discussing with you the open issues.

Analytical Chemistry and especially Speciation Analysis will receive a major boost from upcoming legislation in Europe. REACH will require the registering and testing of potentially hazardous chemicals and will affect some 30,000 chemicals. The European Union Council of Ministers' agreed this month on a revised version and it is expected that the rule will finally approved during 2006.

We hope that our newsletter will attract your interest, and would be happy to receive your suggestions, comments or criticism.

EVISA is keeping you updated  with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and informations from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis.

Seasonal supply of arsenic to Bangladeshi groundwater
Arsenic enters Bangladeshi drinking water from soil near the surface rather than from minerals within the aquifier deep underground as thought, say researchers. The finding suggests that there is an seasonal renewed supply of the poison to Bangladeshi water.

One year EVISA speciation Newsletter - Two years of EVISA web site operation - Time to look back
EVISA started to publish a regular monthly Speciation Newsletter in December 2004. Since then a small and slowly growing group of registered subscribers has followed our service, providing weekly news on all aspects of speciation analysis, events and vacant positions.

REACH: A further step towards final approval
The European Union Council of Ministers' agreed yesterday on a revised proposal for the "Registration, Evaluation and Authorization of Chemicals (REACH)". The new system aims at ensuring greater safety in the manufacture and use of chemical substances by establishing an integrated system for the registration, evaluation, authorisation and restriction of chemicals. It is expected that REACH will help to fill the gaps in existing information on the hazardous properties of some 30,000 chemicals and to transmit the necessary information on the safe use of substances along the industrial supply chain leading to reduced risks for workers, for consumers, and for the environment.

TRAINING

EVISA is supporting the field with educational and training activities meant to improve in the medium- and long-term the knowledge and know-how of users. Well known scientists working in the field are giving the lectures as well as transferring the know-how during the hands-on part of the training courses.

For learning about EVISA's current training activities please consult the following list of events that also provides more specific information and details for registration.

Since the number of places in these courses is rather limited, early registration is recommended !
