Dear Reader !
Welcome to the February edition of the Speciation Newsletter provided by the European Virtual Institute for Speciation Analysis (EVISA).
The European Winter Plasma Conference in Budapest at the beginning of this month was a very important meeting for all scientists working in the field of speciation analysis. Speciation analysis was clearly the most important topic during that meeting and EVISA has been recognized as the primary information source for this area. Once again many thanks for all those of you who stopped-by at our booth.
The upcoming Pittcon event will be another highlight in this direction (see the symposium: Speciation Analyses for Environmental, Food and Industrial Applications on Wednesday afternoon, March 2). Major instrument manufacturers have announced to support speciation analysis by new instruments, enhanced application kits and improved software. We will soon report about the new products.
This Newsletter is meant to inform you about the current trends in elemental speciation analysis with respect to research, techniques, methods, industrial applications, and rules and legislation.
Additional you will profit from most current information regarding events, training activities, and vacancies. Direct linkage to the EVISA web portal http://www.speciation.net connects you immedeately to our highly frequented services, like EVISA's directory of scientists, EVISA's agenda of events and EVISA's hot-link database.
We hope that our newsletter will attract your interest, and would be happy to receive your suggestions, comments or criticism.

New findings about Thimerosal Neurotoxicity
In a recent issue of Neurotoxicology (Vol. 26, January, 20005) researchers from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and from the National Center for Toxicological Research in Jefferson report about their findings with respect to the toxicity of Thimerosal within the body including neurons. They examine the neuro-toxic mechanisms, how the body detoxifies mercury, and the use of N-Acetylcysteine, in facilitating the detoxification pathway within the body.

The use of arsenic in "poultry industry"
Researchers from the National Institutes of Health and the USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service recently reported alarmingly high levels of arsenic contamination in the flesh of broiler chickens [1]. After having reviewed about 5200 chicken samples from the US, these government researchers found that the mean concentration of arsenic in young chicken was 0.39 ppm, 3- to 4-fold higher than in other poultry and meat. Based on the fact that chicken is a meat source of growing importance, it is reasonable to assume that arsenic ingested through chicken consumption has a significant influence on the arsenic intake by humans.

Characterization of Microbial Communities Involved in Methylmercury Cycling at Historic Hg and Au Mining-Impacted Sites
The historic mercury (Hg) and gold (Au) mining operations in California produced a great deal of wealth, but also produced waste material (e.g., tailings, calcines, unprocessed ore, and waste rock) that still pose physical and chemical hazards. The greatest of these may well be the chemical hazard of Hg itself, but the toxicity, mobility, and bioavailability of Hg depend on its chemical form (i.e., species). Methylmercury (CH3Hg+) is the form most detrimental to the environment, because it is a potent neurotoxin that is readily bioaccumulated and biomagnified in aquatic food webs. Toxic effects are primarily manifested in the developing embryos of organisms at higher trophic levels, particularly those organisms for which fish constitutes a large portion of the diet.
