Dear Reader !
Welcome to the April edition of the Speciation Newsletter provided by the European Virtual Institute for Speciation Analysis (EVISA).
The month started with a
couple of events either dedicated to or having main sections on
speciation analysis. EVISA was present with a booth and a presentation
at Spectratom'2005 in Pau and also at the the X IAEAC Workshop on Trace
Metal Speciation in Luxembourg. This and the next month continues with
interesting events dedicated to elements of special interest
within the framework of speciation analysis: mercury, arsenic, antimony
and beryllium (see our agenda below).
Regarding legislation, the hot
discussion about the best ways to reduce mercury emissions from power
plants in the US has come to the next phase: 10 states have joined to
sue EPA over the new Mercury Rule.
In Europe UK Food Standards Agency has granted derogation to some
industry for marketing their Food Supplements containing chromium(III)
compounds such as Chromium picolinate (see our news section below).
We hope that our newsletter
will attract your interest, and would be happy to receive
your suggestions, comments or criticism.

Dissension on the best way to fight mercury pollution
A hot debate about the best way to fight over mercury emission is actually taking place in the US.

Organotins and other toxic chemicals found in household dust across U.S.
According to a report prepared by a coalition of nine U.S. environmental organizations there are many hazardous chemicals in common household dust that are threatening the health of Americans.
An analysis of dust in 70 U.S. homes shows that particles from detergents, packing materials, textiles, computers and cosmetics, among many other ordinary objects, can be hazardous to human health.

United Kingdom's Food Standards Agency granted derogation to Chromium (III) compounds as a food supplement
Several producers of food supplements containing Chromium(III) compounds such as Chromium Picolinate and Chromium polynicotinate received green light from United Kingdom's Food Standards Agency for continued sale of their products in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. The FSA approval provides a four-year window in which the companies can continue to sell their Chromium containing products while the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) reviews their dossiers. If approved by the EFSA, it will result in formal adoption as approved sources of trivalent chromium into EU legislation.

New results on the distribution of mercury in the USA is fueling the discussion on the necessity of the reduction of its emission
Mercury contamination is more pervasive in New England than researchers previously believed. This is the result of a four-year study in Northeastern United States and eastern Canada, in which more than 50 scientists analyzed data from thousands of locations.

Characterization of Microbial Communities Involved in Methylmercury Cycling at Historic Hg and Au Mining-Impacted Sites
The historic mercury (Hg) and gold (Au) mining operations in California produced a great deal of wealth, but also produced waste material (e.g., tailings, calcines, unprocessed ore, and waste rock) that still pose physical and chemical hazards. The greatest of these may well be the chemical hazard of Hg itself, but the toxicity, mobility, and bioavailability of Hg depend on its chemical form (i.e., species). Methylmercury (CH3Hg+) is the form most detrimental to the environment, because it is a potent neurotoxin that is readily bioaccumulated and biomagnified in aquatic food webs. Toxic effects are primarily manifested in the developing embryos of organisms at higher trophic levels, particularly those organisms for which fish constitutes a large portion of the diet.
