Dear Reader !
Welcome to the November edition of the Speciation Newsletter provided by the European Virtual Institute for Speciation Analysis (EVISA).
"Europe is leading the gang" with respect to speciation analysis. This can be seen from the overwhelming activity of European research laboratories that is reflected in the number of publications and conference contributions. This is also reflected in the number of Certified Reference Materials (CRM) certified for elemental species issued in Europe (by BCR/IRMM). Up to now, there are only few CRM's certified for elemental species from the US (mainly on methylmercury) but NIST/EPA now has embarked to change this situation (see our News section). Answering to pressing demands, the target element chosen is Chromium in soil/waste, for which actually there is very little available up to now. However, interestingly, a very similar material is currently under evaluation in Europe (prEN 15192- CEN/TC 292).
We hope that our newsletter will attract your interest, and would be happy to receive your suggestions, comments or criticism.

Unexpected arsenic compounds found in some low rank coals
Organoarsenic compounds were found in some low rank coals from Slovenia and the Czech Republic. Most likely biogeochemical degradation of organic material is responsible for these unexpected organoarsenic compounds.

For the First Time, a Five-Fold Bond
Chemists at UC Davis have made the first stable compound with a five-fold bond between two metal atoms. The work with chromium could give researchers new insights into the nature of chemical bonding.

TRAINING
|
|
|
EVISA is supporting the field with educational and training activities meant to improve in the medium- and long-term the knowledge and know-how of users. Well known scientists working in the field are giving the lectures as well as transferring the know-how during the hands-on part of the training courses.
For learning about EVISA's current training activities please consult the following list of events that also provides more specific information and details for registration.
Since the number of places in these courses is rather limited, early registration is recommended !
