Welcome to the May issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter!

Last week the analytica 2016 in Munich attracted about 35.000 visitors, 40% of them came from abroad. More than 1200 exhibitors presented their products. With these numbers the analytica 2016 surpassed its record from 2014 by about 6.5 %.  Many exhibitors used the fair to introduce new products, some of which of interest for those being involved in trace element and speciation analysis (see the news below).

Last month, U.S. EPA confirmed that it is appropriate and necessary to regulate air toxics, including mercury, from power plants after including a consideration of costs.
The power industry and several states had challenged the rules in federal court (see the news below).

Again, the long list of naturally occurring arsenocompounds has to be extended.
Researchers from the University of Graz now have identified a new group of arsenolipids based on cell-membrane phosphatidylcholines in herring caviar (fish roe). With about 100 naturally occurring arsenocompounds identified we have stopped counting. Especially the evaluation of the toxicity of all of these organic arsenocompounds is a challenging task. An initial conclusion that the presence of most of these lipids in fish oils does not appear to raise toxicity problems when they are consumed  needs to be further investigated.

EVISA is keeping you updated  with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and informations from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis.

With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.

Impressions from the analytica 2016 in Munich
1.244 Exhibitors from 40 countries presented their products last week during the analytica 2016 in Munich to about 35.000 visitors. With these numbers the analytica 2016 surpassed its record from 2014 by about 6.5 %. The growth came mainly from international exhibitors which represented about 44 %. Main exhibiting nations beneath Germany were China, USA and Great Britain.

US EPA Completes Cost/Benefit Analysis of Mercury Rule
On April 14, 2016, the United States Environmental Protection Agency confirmed that it is appropriate and necessary to regulate air toxics, including mercury, from power plants after including a consideration of costs.

Arsenic-Containing Phosphatidylcholines Discovered in Herring Caviar
Again, the list of naturally occuring arsenocompounds has to be extended. Researchers from the University of Graz now have identified a new group of arsenolipids based on cell-membrane phosphatidylcholines in herring caviar (fish roe).
