Welcome to the March issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Nanoparticles (NPs) have been proposed more and more often during recent
times in the biomedical field as active agents, diagnostics, and
carriers in drug delivery systems. A group of Danish scientists have developed a method for the analysis of
selenium nanoparticles in human blood plasma based on capillary
electrophoresis hyphenated to inductively coupled plasma mass
spectrometry. The preliminary study highlights the potential of CE-ICP-MS for the quantitative characterization of SeNP in biological media (see the News below).
Chromium is carcinogenic and therefore in the focus of numerous regulations meant to limit human exposure. The more toxic Cr(VI) species unfortunately is also more mobile and
bioavailable in the soil-water systems compared to Cr(III) and is
therefore also more likely to be transferred from contaminated soil to
drainage water and into plants or aquifers. A UK-based team of researchers now combined an on-line sampling approach for
soil solution with speciation analysis for hexavalent chromium. The
temporal resolution of the approach is in the order of 15 min. and may
be used to capture dynamic interactions (see the news below).
The complexity and related costs of the hyphenated instrumentation used for chromium speciation analysis is a big challenge for its widespread application. An Italian team of researchers have now developed a fast, sensitive and
selective method for Cr(VI) determination based on frontal
chromatography hyphenated with ICP-MS. The setup is using a small self-made column that can be loaded and eluted by using the common peristaltic pump of the ICP-MS. Highly sensitive determination of Cr(VI) can be obtained within one-minute analysis time (see the news below).
Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, most of the conferences scheduled for before July have been postponed or modified to virtual events. EVISA's Agenda of Events is frequently updated in order to keep you informed about the organization of relevant events.
