Welcome to the October issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Technetium is the lightest element with only radioactive isotopes. Naturally occurring technetium forms from spontaneous fission in uranium and thorium ores or from neutron capture in molybdenum ores. All available technetium is synthetically produced. Technetium-99 (99Tc) is a notable human-made radionuclide, released mainly through nuclear weapons development and nuclear power production. Its nuclear isomer, technetium-99m (99mTc), is widely used in diagnostic imaging, with about 30 million procedures annually. Although the amount released is small, the extensive use of 99mTc-based tracersabout 85% of all scintigraphic examsrequires monitoring its discharge into freshwater systems.
Monitoring its environmental release via radioanalytical methods is challenging, needing large samples, laborious preconcentration, and long measurement times. Advances in ICP-MS over recent decades offer high sensitivity, matrix tolerance, and sample throughput. An international research team has developed a cutting-edge method to quantify technetium-99 (99Tc) in wastewater. This method combines manual sample preparation with automated online pretreatment and analyte separation, enhanced by ICP-MS's sensitive detection.
Using 110.35 mL of wastewater, this method achieved a preconcentration factor of 4615, resulting in a detection limit of 0.7 fg/kg. The team successfully determined the 99Tc concentration in hospital wastewater (see the news below).
Selenium is essential, making dietary source identification crucial. It occurs naturally in soil, affecting plant-based food content. Organic selenium species, like selenoamino acids, are notable for their antioxidant properties. Selenoneine, a selenium analogue of the sulphur antioxidant ergothioneine, is particularly potent but mainly found in certain marine fish. Researchers from the University of Graz discovered high levels of selenoneine in the edible mushroom Boletus edulis (see the news below).
