2025/6
Welcome to the June issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

Cadmium is a toxic element, and humans are mainly exposed via food. Since its mobility in the soil, uptake by plants, distribution in plant parts and bioavailability for humans heavily depend on the cadmium species being present, cadmium speciation analysis is mandatory for an deep understanding and meaningful risk assessment. Researchers from the National Food Institute of Denmark have recently developed a novel analytical approach to identify cadmium-binding compounds in plant-based foods. This method combines size exclusion chromatography (SEC) with inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) and quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (QTOF-MS), enabling detailed multi-elemental speciation analysis. The authors believe their methodology represents a significant advancement in cadmium speciation analysis and offers a promising foundation for future studies on Cd bioaccessibility and risk mitigation in plant-based diets. (see the news below).

Mercury release into the environment poses a global health risk due to its presence in air, land, and water systems. Human exposure to Hg, primarily through contaminated fish is considered to be a significant health risk. Monitoring Hg levels in human hair is a valuable and noninvasive method for assessing individual exposure. Hair provides a stable, long-term record of organomercury concentrations and dietary intake, making it useful for large-scale population studies. The National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES) in Japan has developed the NIES CRM No. 13-a, a new certified reference material for human hair, using scalp hair from Asian females. This comprehensive CRM represents a significant advancement in quality control for biomonitoring and environmental health studies of mercury and trace elements in human hair (see the news below).
