2018/5
Welcome to the May issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

Biological functions of metals are not only specified by the element itself, but also by its chemical form and by its organ, cell and subcellular location. In order to study such biological functions therefore analytical methods should provide information about speciation and localization. Speciation analysis and bioimaging are able to provide such information. A very important aspect for both methodologies is quantification. Quantitative imaging is a prerequisite for the correct interpretation of the concentration data displayed in the image. External calibration against standard materials is an often applied approach for quantification.  Unfortunately, reference materials, with certified concentrations and homogeneous distribution within a surface or a sample volume of a biological material are not available. Researchers from the University of Münster come up with a quantification  method for bioimaging by laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS). The new method is  based on Isotope Dilution Analysis, that can overcome some of the problems (see the news below).

Bioimaging with the aid of LA-ICP-MS was also used to study the distribution of gadolinium in the brain of patients who received serial injections of gadolinium based MRI contrast agent for enhanced medical diagnostic imaging. Their results show that gadolinium depositions in the brain are restricted to blood vessel walls, while the neuropil is spared and apparent cellular reactions are absent.

The methodology of laser ablation based bioimaging and its application for biological and clinical application will be discussed during a workshop taking place in Münster next week.
