2023/08
Welcome to the August issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !

Instrumental analysis is not always able to determine all the species of an element within a sample. Yet, knowledge about the speciation of an element is mandatory for the evaluation of its bioavailability, toxicity and environmental fate and transport. Therefore, total speciation generally relies on utilizing analytical methods in conjunction with chemical speciation models. Reliable speciation modelling on the other hand depends on the quality of available thermodynamic data. For all those working with such modelling it is good news that the Joint Expert Speciation System (JESS) Thermodynamic Database is now available as a set of freely downloadable PDF files (see the news below).

Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) is one of the most often used detection system for speciation analysis. While ICP-MS provides ultra-trace detection power for many metal species, the ionization behaviour of halogens is not that favourable. While the detection power for chlorine and fluorine is relatively poor, those for bromine and iodine are still acceptable. Using chromatographic separation coupled with ICP-MS detection, researchers from Denmark have developed a speciation method for iodine in seaweed. Using the developed method, a range of different seaweed types were analysed, with total iodine content ranging from 33 to 5611 µg/g. Apart from inorganic iodine, monoiodotyrosine (MIT), diiodotyrosine (DIT) also unknown species were observed (see the news below).

NEWS
EVISA is keeping you updated with what is going on in speciation analysis. In this section you will find news about the most current research results, about trends, legal issues and information from manufacturers in the field of speciation analysis.

Unfortunately, this month we have not seen any publication related to speciation analysis of general interest. In case that you feel that we missed something, we would be happy to receive a notification.

With all the links to further information and publications the News archive is a valuable collection of "hot topics" in speciation analysis. We continuously update even former news with new links and information so that all news are actual all the time.

Optimization of speciation analysis of iodine in seaweed
Researchers from the National Food Institute in Denmark have optimized the extraction procedure and chromatographic separation of iodine species found in seaweed. Using the optimized method, they studied the iodine speciation in different types of seaweed samples.
