Welcome to the June issue of EVISA's Speciation Newsletter !
Arsenic in drinking water is posing a health risk to over 100 million people. Speciation analysis is crucial to determine whether the arsenic is in the reduced (arsenite, iAs(III)) or oxidized (arsenate, iAs(V)) form, which is essential for selecting the most appropriate treatment technology. Unfortunately iAs(III) can be easily oxidized during sampling and sample storage, calling for effective sample preservation. A group of researchers from China have now compared 14 different methods for preserving inorganic arsenic species in reducing groundwater. They recommend adding large amounts of EDTA and storing the samples cold and in the dark (see the news below).
Chemical disinfection of drinking water using ozone, chlorine, or chloramine is a common practice worldwide. Unfortunately, disinfectants react with iodides to produce iodinated disinfection by-products such as iodoacetic acids (IAAs), compounds of very high cytotoxicity and genotoxicity. Chinese researchers have now developed a rapid method for determining monoiodoacetic acid and inorganic iodine in drinking water by combining capillary electrophoresis and inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (CE-ICP-MS) (see the news below).
Questions related to the biological effects of metals and metalloids will be discussed during the 9th International Symposium on Metallomics, taking place next week in London. Virtual registration is open until 17th June 2024.

DIRECTORY
|
|
|
EVISA's directory of scientist is a versatile tool to facilitate contact with scientists in the field of speciation and related sciences. The directory is fully searchable for names, addresses, research topics etc. You should bookmark this directory as an always up-to-date address book. (In order to hinder SPAM robots for collecting the E-mail accounts, we hide them in a special format).
More than 300 active scientists in the field of speciation analysis already joined the directory. Join this great directory that is extensively linked to all type of other information on this site, such as homepages, conferences and literature.
If your entry is still missing in this directory, please contact us at info@speciation.net.
