Report from TraceSpec 2007 continuation from page 2, page 1 Photo 12: Alfredo Sanz-Medel He was followed by Gerhard A. Wiesmüller (Umweltprobenbank des Bundes, Münster, Germany) who gave an overview of metal species related to human health emphasizing that more interdisciplinary research is needed to enlighten the role of metal species in human metabolism. The following presenters concentrated on the development of new methodology for speciation analysis in the life sciences. Susanne Bomke (University of Münster, Germany) presented the interesting approach of using metallocene reagents for the quantification of proteins. Stefan Pieper (Humboldt University, Berlin, Germany) continued in a similar direction by using Isotope-coded affinity tags (ICAT) for the absolute quantification of proteins and peptides using HPLC/ICP MS. The coffee-break was used for further discussion and the last possibility to visit the exhibition. The second part of the last session started with a contribution by David Point (NIST, USA) who discussed the influence of sample preparation of CRMs for the stability of mercury speciation. Using double spike species specific isotope dilution he was able to follow species transformation as well as to achieve accurate results. Frank Hasenäcker (University Duisburg-Essen, Germany) followed with a feasibility study demonstrating the online coupling of 2D-HPLC and CN-PAGE for native separation of metalloproteins with subsequent detection by LA-ICP-MS. Aleksandra Polatajko (ISAS, Dortmund, Germany) discussed the combined use of PAGE and Nano ESI-FTICR to study metal binding proteins in plants and M.R. Fernández de la Campa (Department of Physical and Analytical Chemistry, Oviedo, Spain) presented an approach of the combined use of HPLC-ICPMS and ESI-MS to study the possible synergic effect of cadmium and selenium in induced metallothionein. Finally, Norbert Jakubowski (ISAS, Dortmund, Germany) discussed the possibility of heteroatom tagging as a tool for quantitative proteomics. After this very interesting session on the possibilities of speciation analysis to contribute to proteomics Uwe Karst announced the Poster awards. He mentioned that the jury members had a difficult task, since the quality of the posters was high in general. Altogether, the poster jury had selected 5 posters. The "Roland Frei Award" sponsored by IAEAC with 700 € was given for the best poster of a young scientists in both poster sessions. The jury selected Yvonne Scheller from the Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz with her work on the "Detection of Ni-species and Co-species in single living plant cells with high lateral resolution" as the winner and Dieter Klockow from IAEAC presented the award. For the second poster price of the poster session I sponsored by Perkin-Elmer with 300 €, the jury selected Senchao Lai (Johannes Gutenberg-University, Mainz) with his contribution on "Iodine speciation in the marine aerosol by inductively coupled plasma isotope dilution mass spectrometry". Harald Hagendorfer from the Karl-Franzens-University, Graz was nominated as the winner of the first price for the same session, sponsored by Thermo with 500 €. Andrew Barker from PS Analytical congratulated Daniel Pröfrock from the GKSS Research Centre in Geesthacht with his contribution on the "Hyphenation of capillary LC with ICP-MS and on-line micro fraction collection for MALDI-TOF analysis as complementary tools for protein analysis" as the winner of the second poster price of the second poster session sponsored by PSA with 300 €. Finally, Helmut Feuerbacher from AHF Analysentechnik presented the first poster award sponsored by his company with 500 € to Arunachalam Venkatachalam from ISAS - Institute for Analytical Sciences, Dortmund, for his contribution on "Multiplexed probing of cytochromes P450 using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS)". ![]() Tourist information For further information about Mainz you might wish to visit the following web sites: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Accomodation If not done already you should book your hotel as early as possible. Other events during the workshop (e.g. IAA/Frankfurt) lead to a shortage of rooms in Mainz !! ![]() ![]() Late poster contributions Posters are a very important tool for communicating results of research studies towards the audience of the workshop. While the deadline for submitting oral contributions is gone you may still submit your poster contribution (via Email to the conference office using the abstract form). However, please recognize that contributions submitted after August 25 will not be included in the final program/book of abstracts. ![]() ![]() Late program changes Unfortunately our invited speaker Constant van den Berg had to cancel his participation because of personal reasons. Instead his co-author Pascal Salaün will give a presentation with the title: Stripping voltammetry for metals and metalloid speciation in natural waters. Excepted presentations mentioned in the preliminary program from authors that did not register have been excluded from the final program. The final workshop booklet containing the program and the abstracts is now on this website and can be downloaded as a PDF-File here. ![]() |
