Taiwan Society for Mass Spectrometry (TSMS) was formed in 2003 with the determination of disseminating the knowledge of mass spectrometry and allied topics. Recently, the explosive growth of researches and applications, such as environmental monitoring, medical analysis and biochemical development (genomics, metabolomics, and proteomics), related to mass spectrometry (MS) has made MS approaches played an important role ever since.
MS Societies have been established continuously and widely both in Southeast Asia and other developed countries in the world. Professor Her, Guor-Rong from Taiwan University was elected as the first President of TSMS. The active members of TSMS are always kept around 500 people from academic, industrial or governmental institutions. In order to improve the MS technology in Taiwan and assist the researchers to have more connections to the world, TSMS expects to broaden the connection to Mainland China and overseas. Therefore, from 2005-2008, TSMS had invited many scholars from United States, Canada, Hong Kong, Singapore and Mainland China to join with TSMS conference as speakers. The more researches have been accomplished, the faster the establishment of TSMS has to be done. With the aim of improving MS technology and promoting the application of MS on different fields, annual conference of TSMS was held and nearly 200 papers were presented as posters and talks. Meanwhile, various activities are taken place in Northern, Middle and Southern Taiwan. As well as training courses and workshops explore new MS application technology to those who seek to learn or new in MS filed.
In 2009, Professor Jentaie Shiea from National Sun Yat-sen University was elected to be the third President of TSMS. In order to perform well in the role of the important position, Professor Shiea has an eager heart for making the best effort in applying all the purposes of TSMS, many conferences and courses were held. Moreover, Professor Shiea led a group of professors to Tsukuba, Japan to attend the first Asian and Oceanic Mass Spectrometry Conference (AOMSC) in 2009, and to Mainland China to attend Chinese conference on mass spectrometry in 2010.In addition, TSMS created a Young Scholar Award to encourage young and talented MS researchers in Taiwan.
Speaking of the international conference held by TSMS, it highly focused on connecting with international technology, and TSMS expected to use the opportunities to enhance the technical communication, and make the best efforts to improve the research ability. We are enthusiastic to have more cooperation with other MS societies to promote MS to the world.
