Founded in 1916, the Optical Society of America (OSA) was organized to increase
and diffuse the knowledge of optics, pure and applied; to promote the common
interests of investigators of optical problems, of designers and of users of
optical apparatus of all kinds; and to encourage cooperation among them. The
purposes of the Society are scientific, technical and educational.
The mission of OSA is to promote the generation,
application and archiving of knowledge in optics and photonics and to
disseminate this knowledge worldwide.
The Optical Society of America is dedicated to
providing its members and the scientific community with educational
resources that support technical and professional development. OSA
publications, events and services help to advance the science of light
by addressing the ongoing need for shared knowledge and innovation. The
Society's commitment to excellence and long-term learning is the
driving force behind all its initiatives.
The Optical Society
of America brings together optics and photonics scientists, engineers, educators,
technicians and business leaders. OSA's membership totals more than 14,000 individuals
from over 81 countries. Approximately 36% of the Society's members reside outside
the United States. Officers of the Society
are elected by the membership.
OSA maintains a staff
of 125, headquartered
near Dupont Circle in Washington, D.C. Led by the Executive
Director, Elizabeth A. Rogan, the staff supports the activities of the Society
which include the publication of peer-reviewed journals
and books, the sponsorship of scientific meetings
and exhibits, public policy initiatives,
