At RA Chilton we have the ability to produce sharp hole edges, high quality surface finishes and tapered holes. All of these are critical to help reduce plasma disturbances, secondary ion emissions and backgrounds. Skimmers are electroformed in nickel and are available with or without Platinum tips.

Our copper cored cooling technology has now extended to skimmer cones, which is particularly beneficial in protecting the sharp orifice edges in high power systems where the skimmer uses very thin wall sections. This development enables the design of higher sensitivity cones where the tips would otherwise melt or burn out due to the low thermal conductivity of nickel.

Copper Core Cones

The majority of our sample cones – and also some of our more specialist skimmer cones – feature copper cores.

We use copper cores to conduct heat away from the cone tip, thus greatly extending cone lifetime. This image shows the typical construction of a platinum tipped copper cored sample cone:
