Description
|
Potassium is one of the three fundamental nutrient elements necessary for plant growth. Potassium containing fertilisers are applied to soils and crops in either the chloride or the sulphate form, depending on the particular crop. Potassium chloride is most frequently used.
This material was taken from a batch of industrial grade potassium chloride produced by the "Mines d'Alsace", France, from sylvite. It is commonly described as "chlorure de potassium thermique, 60% K20".
Potassium chloride from the raw sylvite is separated from sodium chloride by precipitation using the differing solubilities of the two salts at different temperatures.
About 150 kg of the material was taken from a complete batch and homogenised in a rotating drum for 150 hours and about 1000 bottles were filled with about 100 g each of the homogenised material. The homogenisation and the filling were carried out under dry argon. |
