Analysts can now perform microwave extractions with polar or non-polar solvents using the Ethos SEL Microwave Labstation. Milestone’s technique combines microwave heating and magnetic stirring of extraction solvent inside multiple sample vessels. Agitation ensures homogeneous mixing of phases and uniform temperature distribution throughout extraction mixtures. Microwave extraction performed with stirring typically yields higher analyte recoveries than achieved in static vessels. Pure non polar solvents (i.e. n-Hexane) can be heated at low levels of microwave power using magnetic stir bars made of Milestone’s proprietary fluoropolymer Weflon™ . This chemically inert fluoropolymer absorbs microwave energy, heating nonpolar microwave-transparent solvents allowing microwave extraction procedures to be performed without addition of polar co-solvents. This allows conventional extraction methods to be converted to microwave methods without changes in solvent composition.
