The first incarnation of the British Society for Allergy and Clinical Immunology (BSACI) was in 1947 when a group of enthusiasts came together to form the British Association of Allergists. In 1969 a journal, Clinical Allergy was started with Professor Jack Pepys as editor which became Clinical and Experimental Allergy in 1989. The British Allergy Society as it was then called became the BSACI in 1973 reflecting the increasing strength in clinical immunology in the UK.
The core aim of the BSACI and its forerunners has always been to improve the management of allergic and related diseases in the United Kingdom. It has endeavoured to do this by promoting good clinical practice, creating forums for post-graduate education, providing a curriculum for the training of allergy specialists and supporting research into the causes and treatment of allergic disease. To achieve these aims we hold an annual meeting consisting of both new research and clinical updates, as well as a series of regional meetings. We also support the internationally respected journal Clinical and Experimental Allergy. One of our major drives in recent years has been to try and increase the number of consultants practising allergy and clinical immunology in the UK and provide a more even geographical spread of services across the country. This will continue to be one of the major focus of activity in coming years. The BSACI exists to serve the needs of its members. As well as the activities described above we provide travel fellowships to help trainees attend scientific meetings. We also actively represent the interests of the speciality on relevant Royal College, European and NHS Committees. An increasingly important role of the BSACI is to represent the speciality to the wider public in particular interfacing with patient orientated support groups.
The BSACI is a relatively small and friendly society comprised of dedicated professionals trying to improve the lives of people with a wide range of debilitating diseases. I have always felt it a privilege to be a member of the BSACI and I am honoured to be its current president. I look forward to working with the membership to fulfil the aims of the society to the best of our ability.
