CNR-Institute of Ecosytem Study, secion of Verbania Pallanza (CNR ISE)

The Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia "Dott. Marco de Marchi" was established in 1938 as a foundation. In 1954 the Institute became a public institution under the control of the Ministry of Education. In 1977 it was integrated into the National Research Council (CNR).
In 2002, in the framework of the reorganization of the National Research Council (CNR) the Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia  became the Institute of Ecosystem Study (Istituto per lo Studio degli Ecosistemi), associating others CNR's institutes. Its Section of Hydrobiology and Ecology of Inland Waters operates in the historic building of the former Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia "Dott. Marco de Marchi".
The Section of Hydrobiology  conducts its own programme of fundamental research which is financed by CNR. In addition, the Institute undertakes commissioned research for Governmental and other Public customers on many aspects of freshwater sciences. The Library of the Institute is one of the oldest libraries of limnological interest. The scientific publications housed there include: 600 journals (searchable list online), 6000 books (searchable catalogue online), 50000 miscellaneous abstracts. The Section of Hydrobiology  continuing the publishing activity of the Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia, has  since 1999 published the international Journal of Limnology (full text online), the new layout  of  the previous hystoric  publication:  Memorie dell'Istituto Italiano di Idrobiologia (online since 1996).

June 2005: all the sections of all the Institutes of CNR  are cancelled. The  "Section of Hydrobiology and Ecology of Inland Waters"  is now CNR- ISE, Center of Verbania.
