Bill Davison and Hao Zhang invented DGT in Lancaster. The patent, filed by Lancaster University in 1993, is granted throughout the world. More than £ 2,000,000 has been invested on developing, testing and applying DGT at Lancaster. Many funding bodies have been involved, inclus´ding the three UK Research Councils, NERC, BBSRC and EPSRC.
In 1997 a separate commercial company DGT Research Ltd. was formed to serve two functions. By supplying basic DGT equipment at low cost, it enables other laboratories to undertake their own research with DGT. This has alloweed the rapid growth and testing of DGT: over 40 laboratories have been supplied in 20 different countries. DGT Research also supplies directly and through agents the complete assemblies for immediate use in monitoring and measurement programmes undertaken commercially. Examples include monitoring by industry, regulatory agencies and consultants, and execution of contracts for government-funded monitoring programmes.
